Get rid of the Vouch process.

Post by Guest on Sun Sep 08, 2013 11:54 am

The title is self explanatory.

The reasoning is rather simple, the predictions of doom when removing administrator required registration were proven false (at least from what I've seen, I tend to visit DefiasRP before/after work), but the forum has not been invaded by bots, it has not fallen to a mass registration of trolls, nothing has happened.

The vouching process for people to prove they are roleplayers is obsolete. Banning people and removing posts does not take that long in return for the reward of having a larger proportion of roleplayers register. Now you might say that the dedicated people might go through the application / vouching process anyway, but it is irrelevant.

There were only a few people that were unwelcome to this forum for a few years, that was me, Celltrex and.. heck, I don't even know who else. I'm here now, Celltrex.. well, doesn't really matter where he is.

Thoughts?

i completely agree with vangrel.

A forum should be accessible, and fun, especially when it's about RP game, it should not be treated like a special secret club in which only a selected few of the FBI can access.

What do you guys think the vouch system did in the long run, if not forcing out new, dedicated players that dosent have the ties for be vouched by the "big names" of the community? how cana server survive if we dont give the new blood a chance?

please be less power-mad and more user-friendly

I agree, the whole process is pointless and people might have to wait too long to get full membership. I say let's remove it and give it a try, if it proves to be a bad call, a revamp can always be made.

I love vouching. It makes me feel important.

On a more serious note, I don't think there's no real need for it. Forums are now open, griefers can simply /who and I think it's just a slow bureaucracy.

Vouch. huehuehue
If the amount of trolls becomes unbearable, we can always appoint more moderators to swing the righteous hammer of ban. But currently, I'm surprised to see anyone posting on the registration forum, so most likely all those that have any motivation to register already have done so. Removing the vouching process can't atleast hurt the amount of new members. It was a useful system when it was brought up, but times change.

I found it silly when I joined, I still find it silly.
While there's one good thing about it, it keeps out complete idiot trolls who wouldn't get in any other way than to not have it, (such as most members of Mith), and keeping people from making multiple accounts just to seem anonymous.

It takes too much effort* and too much time* to gain access to something that should be available to all the roleplayers on DB.

*Many people who I have directed to this site simply do not understand that you first need to have your account activated and then make an application on top of that. The whole registration thing is very hard to find as well, since people assume the frontpage is all there is after their accounts are activated.

*Sometimes you have to wait for days to get in.

ADministrators can see i.p addresses, so making multiple accounts really won't work. Idiot trolls won't last long, it's not all that difficult to delete posts/ban a user and as stated above, new moderators can be appointed if the work load increases.

That was due to me being away, my apologies.

As for the topic as a whole, I'd be overjoyed to see the back of the system. I'll take it up with the moderators and get back to you all.

Time do change, as said above.  And I'd not miss the system (as it stands it's really Ledgic and myself who deal with vouches and registrations).

However, it really doesn't take that long usually (a few days isn't the longest age in the world, though sometimes Mods are away, or things are missed, true).

And it is nothing to do with "power" or being "power-mad" what utter drivel.  Seriously. Nor is it a name-check for the big people, the famous of the community or whatever.

The system was a tool for keeping tools away.  And tools can be changed, and new things tried.  There are things we can continue to check, like IPs etc.  And as stated any change could be reverted.

It might be useful to tinker with the Rules and Regulations side of things if we do away with the Vouch/Registration system.  Making things more apparent and reiterating such things as no double accounts (unless after consultation with the Mod Team) and using your character/family name as your forum name.

It's not about the amount of time it takes, but that it is simply very confusing for most new players. Having to explain to them that they need to write a registration post and wait for it to approved and such goes above many people's heads.

Basically this. Vouch. It can be daunting I'm sure to new players who perhaps don't know anyone yet to be shunned at the front door because they don't have anyone to "put a good word in" so to say.

This has been discussed amongst the mods and it seems the vouch system has indeed had its day. I'm going to work now, but I'll get this sorted when I get back this afternoon.

From what I can tell we only have 2 mods. Ledgic and Gruftoof. If its been taking them a week or so to let someone in because, lets face it, the pair of them have real lives as well, what's to stop it taking them this long to ban any idiots that show up?
We may have more mods and admins than Ledgic and Gruft, but it certainly doesn't look like we do. And a week is too long to have to put up with trolls for.

Tbh, a couple more mods would have solved this imo. I never had an issue with the vouching system, it always seemed pretty quick to get in. As for people not understanding it... Seriously? I can't wait to see these people post; "I got event idea. all play tag, ur it."

I don't actually care either way, so I'll just join the crowd.

I do agree Vaell. It really wasn't "hard" to do. But seemingly "people" have difficulties with it and could be "put off". It has gone past it's use, probably. But we shall see.

I'd add though, in relation to the OP. It was about far more than one or two people. There have been a number of tools we've used this tool to stop getting in. But then again, some people have got "through" anyway. I'm willing to try this Brave New World of no vouches.

We don't need more Mods to help with registrations and such. We do have Mods who don't have a massively "obvious" presence but are still involved behind the scenes and acting on reports etc.

I don't believe we need more Mods. And AFAIK we aren't looking for any. So don't start suggesting that next!
