Revamping Forum Categorization

Post by Drustai on Sun May 12, 2013 5:55 am

Another topic from me.

Have the forum admins given any thought to making 'open' categories instead of 'closed' categories?

As an example, in the Group Forums area, we currently have it where you have to click on multiple forums to get to an internal, embedded forum. Much like browsing through Explorer on Windows.

Category 1\Category 2\Category 3\Forum

Outside the group forums area, we don't have any categories at all.

This is very messy and makes it very hard to find things.

Other forums typically go by open categories, completely viewable from the main page, as follows:

---Category 1---
Forum A
Forum B
Forum C

---Category 2---
Forum D
Forum E
Forum F

The latter is much easier to use, with the only issue being that it extends the vertical length of a forum (though this is far easier to manage than having to go through a million embedded categories).

Personally, I'd like to see DefiasRP categorized in the following way, all viewable from the main page:

---General---
Registration
DefiasRP Forum
General Chat
Game Related | Lore | Trade

---Roleplay---
In Character
Events
Looking for Roleplay
Registry
Population\ (remain embedded forum)
Library\ (remain embedded forum)

---Group Forums---
Alliance Races\ (remain embedded forum)
Horde Races\ (remain embedded forum)
Pandaren
Horde: The Gathering
Alliance: Stormwind Council | Ministry of Defense
etc

Just so that I understand: Categorized in a way like in Game Related where you can see Trade and Lore?

The forum would be painfully huge.

I'm thinking it could be sorted but with keeping the group forums gathered in there (and having them all there, categorizing them too in the same manner for easier access).

That, or having the active group forums there as they are kinda few right now, keeping the less active ones in an embedded forum (while also removing forums that are not at all used).

Edit: And also in the description explaining exactly which forums can be found in the embedded forum. I think that might help out a lot too.

A third thought, which I think can work best without making the front forum huge (that can really be a pain in the ass for viewing the forum on the phone which I personally do at times):

Sorting the group forums into one single embedded forum and categorize them - and like written before specify which forums can be found in there in the description.

Not really. It'd be about average for forums of this level of activity. I've seen much larger.

DefiasRP, as it is currently categorized, is an extremely basic format and rather small for the amount of individual forums it possesses. It also makes it very difficult to navigate due to the insane amount of embedded categories.

Like so:

Consider The Three Hammers' board as an example of this style of organization.

Ah yeah, then I get it, thats how I thought you meant.

I'll let this discussion keep ongoing for a while to see where it's going. Meanwhile I'm cleaning out the group forum to see what we're left with.

The amount of imbedded categories isn't a problem. I guess I prefer a few simple clicks to get where I am rather than long main pages. Long main pages are unsightly, I avoid forums that use that format.

Regardless, this isn't my forum, so I'm not going to debate over it :p

Personally I've heard many people standing on either side. Many have said they rather have it all viewable on the front page where as others prefer a relatively small front page where they then navigate into the different forums. It's hard to know what to do about it, or whether perhaps a vote would work best (then there's the question of how many would take the vote, if their voices only should be heard etc etc etc).

Anyway, what I hope is that more will write their opinions here to get a discussion going about it.

Scrolling down takes one second. One roll of the mouse wheel.

Clicking on a category takes one. Waiting for it to load (for me) takes about 3-4 seconds. Clicking on another link takes one. Then another 3-4 seconds wait. Clicking on another link takes one. Etcetera.

To get to the Stormwind Council forum required making 4 clicks. This took almost half a minute for me. It also made it impossible to tell people how to get to the Council forum. ("Well, first you have to go to the Group Forums section. Then you go to Guild Forums. Then you click Stormwind Council. Then you click Stormwind Council open! Tada!")

I'll just say that the TTH forum is rather enjoyable to manage and handle in comparison. It is MUCH easier to navigate through, mostly due to using the same style that Drustai posted here.

While I agree that using the structure:

Category
Parent-forum
Child/sub-forum.

is far better readable than,

simply:
Parent-forum
Child/sub-forum (which we have now, since the only category we have is: "forum")

I don't think that amount in which the the group forums are used will actually increase readability and ease; over making things even more clotted.

I'm personally of the opinion that we already have enough parent-forums, and too many sub-forums...
