[IC-Open] Petition of the Anethionean Faithful to the King&Council of Stormwind

Post by Melnerag on Wed Jul 11, 2012 11:34 am

OOC Information Beforehand:

A few words beforehand. I work under the assumption that Kingdom of Stormwind is much larger than it is shown to be in-game and you cannot ride through it in ten minutes. I also assume that the population of the Kingdom is much larger, since if RPG-lore-books are to be followed then Stormwind has 70% urbanization rate…which is rather on the impossible side. Not to mention the entire human race won’t even reach a million.

The petition itself is not as outlandish as it may sound. Religious minorities in western Europe (read: jews) enjoys limited autonomy and had their own marriage-family-and-inheritance laws. In Islamic kingdoms, religious minorities enjoyed an even greater level of autonomy to the point of being left to their own devices as long as thaid pay taxes to the ruler. Autonomy does not equal independence, it simply means that more decisions are taken on a local level.

This letter is meant for the purpose of Political RP. While it is discussed, it creates some interesting situations. If it is not accepted, it can lead to some interesting RP and if it is accepted it will include the Chapter in the whole economic-RP thing that is going on lately!
Vicar Osmand's Letter to King Varian on behalf of the Anethionean people

Hail Anethion and may the Light be with you,

His majesty is always in the prayers of the Anethioneans and I pray that this letter finds his majesty in good health.

Twenty-three villages in three different baronies contain an absolute majority Anethionean population, more than nine out of ten inhabitants is a follower of our holy Prophet. These good people aspire to be able to live their lives in accordance with the Holy Law, that is why I request his majesty to grant them limited autonomy to live closer to the Light and better serve their king.

The Anethionean Faith urges all able-bodied men and women to defend their homes and fight for their king and proclaims the Universal Crusade against evil a sacred duty. Your Anethionean subjects will keep the lands of their baronies clear of murlocks, gnolls and bandits if allowed their right to form militia and they will enlist in your armies with righteous zeal, being already trained in fighting in their baronies beforehand. They will support their king in his war against the Demons and the Undead, as is their holy duty to the Light.

We humbly beseech His Majesty to gain autonomy in the following areas:

Common and Contract Law
The followers of the prophet want to obey the Holy Law in the matters of family, marriage, divorce, inheritance, village-life and contracts between the members of the community. Any contracts between an Anethionean from the baronies and an outsider will, as is proper, be treated under the Royal contract laws.

Criminal Law
The petitioners want to see the Criminal Law pass into their local care when dealing with offenses committed by one member of the community against another and by outsiders against the members of the community within the borders of the baronies. The faithful want their criminal and penal codes to be in line with the Holy Law.

Appointment of judges
Anethionean faith grants judiciary power to the members of the clergy who have received proper education in the subject and were appointed with the consent of the community. We wish the right to be able to appoint our own judges within the baronies to deal with the legal matters requested.

Education
The Kingdom does not have a centralized system of education, but minister Astroloxia has placed bans on religious orphanages and religious education for children. We want to supervise our own education in the baronies, according to our curriculum.

Regional defense
It is already the duty of our barons and knights to defend these lands, and they will continue to do so under the Holy Law. We humbly request the right to form, train and field citizen-militias above the existing noble retainers as is demanded by the Holy Law.

We assure his majesty that specific royal laws will be obeyed without question and we shall never commit treason or sedition, fall to veneration of entities condemned by the church or permit more lenient laws on the Dark Arts, nor will this negatively affect the tax revenues his majesty extracts from the baronies or the manpower he recruits for his army. We will always recognize the King of Stormwind as our lawful liege and will never see ourselves as an independent nation. We recognize that the Kingdom of Stormwind is in his majesty’s care and affirm his Light-given right to withdraw any liberties granted at his pleasure and trust that he will respect them unless the needs of the state demand otherwise.

Following baronies and villages are petitioning for autonomy:

Barony of Clearwater (on the shores of Crystal Lake)

Baron Wilhelm Gladerider and two landed knights in his service Sir Horatio Lightshield and Sir Steven Fallows

One large village (789 inhabitants, 753 Anethionean)
Four villages (total of 834 inhabitants, 811 Anethionean)
Six hamlets (total of 478, 463 Anethionean)

Barony of Skypond (South-eastern Elwynn)

Baronness Helen Riverguard and one landed knight in her service, Sir Allistair Ashcloak

One large village (615 inhabitants, 589 Anethionean)
Three villages (total of 598, 547 Anethionean)
Four hamlets (total of 374, 351 Anethionean)

Barony of Redfalls (North-eastern Elwynn, bordering Redridge Mountains)

Baron Emmanuel Hillfort-Deadwood

Two villages (total of 464 inhabitants, 411 Anethionean)
Three hamlets (total of 298 inhabitants, 268 Anethionean)

Although his people are willing to live under the Holy Law, Baron Hillfort does not support them in their righteous aspirations and has refused to convert to the Anethionean faith or sign this petition. We trust in His Majesty to see the aspirations of the faithful people as valid and find a legal solution.

May the Holy Light, the illuminator of the world, bless his majesty with a long and glorious reign and lend him Its strength in all good deeds.

Abbot Osmand Lightguard,
Vicar of Anethion and Supreme Lector of the Tyrrean Order

[The letter is continued with lists of thousands peasant-signatures and very impressive seals of the aforementioned barons and knights]

IC Notable Complaints:

1. The three counts under whose authority said baronies reside have expressed their concern at the petition and expect reassurances that their noble rights and privileges over them will be respected should the petition be granted.
2. Baron Emmanuel Hillfort has sent a complaint, reassuring the King that he had nothing to do with the petition sent by his wayward people and beseeches the King not to grant it.
3. Non-anethionean population of the baronies has sent a counter-petition declaring that they refuse to bow to the Holy Law should it be granted or move to another barony abandoning their ancient homes and fear for the lives, and implore the King to decline the Anethionean petition or at least find a way to protect them and allow them to continue living under King’s Law.
4. Knights, barons and counts from other regions of the Kingdom with a strong Anethionean presence have sent a petition asking to deny the request, afraid that it may encourage their people to move to these lands. Should the request be granted, they request to temporarily tie their peasants to the land to avoid an exodus.

Participation in this RP:

Due to its very nature, such RP is at least for a half tied to the forums. Exchange of letters. The matter should be loud enough for many people to find out about it. Your character can send a letter to the state, either seconding the petition or arguing against it. He can also send a letter to the Chapter. Either way, keep the letters to this thread! The King cannot make a decision due to being an NPC, for the sake of role-play we assume that he tasked the Council with investigating the matter and presenting him with their counsel on the best approach. Role-play must flow!

PS: If this idea makes you angry, it is because it was made to make you angry. But I hope you can keep your anger to purely IC. We are after conflict-driven RP, not Epic Drama!

I'd be deeply shocked if this would be permitted, it would essentially render the 'counts' completely powerless in their own lands. and considering its a monarchy, not a Democracy...

Nice though :p

Braiden is brought a copy of the petition by his secretary. He reads it trough then shreds it and tosses it into his fireplace
They have quite some nerve. I'll be damned if this ridiculous disruption of the order is allowed.

What exactly would account to an "official reply" in this case?

As far as I know, nobody is roleplaying the King, so I am not sure who you are expecting to respond to this that hasn't already.

Tsk we dont but we got this council Razz As the title says:

Petition of the Anethionean Faithful to the King&Council of Stormwind. The council tends to make some judgement calls on behalf of our beloved King Razz

This letter is meant for the purpose of Political RP. While it is discussed, it creates some interesting situations. If it is not accepted, it can lead to some interesting RP and if it is accepted it will include the Chapter in the whole economic-RP thing that is going on lately!

Hence my wish for a reply Razz
