Flitzi's Shadow Doctrines

Post by Dréfurion on Mon Jul 18, 2011 1:40 am

OOC: This is the first chapter of the doctrines I'm making for my character Flitzi Flitzcogg, Im posting it already so people can correct me on mistakes with the lore I might (and will) make. Please do keep in mind that the doctrine is filled with Flitzi's personal opinions and his gnomish pragmatic views.

Preface
“Shadow”, a collective term that is hard to understand and treacherous in it’s use; for there is not one Shadow or one source to each form of Shadow found in the world. These writings will deal with teachings and views on Shadow from across cultures, the origins of Shadow and how Shadow should be used against our foes and for our cause.

Chapter 1 – Views on Shadow
Shadow in the Common tongue is a term that has been coined for many obscure energies that are often perceived as destructive, corruptive and malicious, with disregard of their origins. It is their origins, however, that some find of the utmost importance when assessing whether certain employed Shadow energies are tolerable or not. In the night elven society, for example, certain Shadow energies are perceived as a gift from their (false) God-dess that can and should be employed to do good, whereas Shadow energies formed from arcane are perceived as a heinous crime.

This contrasts the opinion held by most Humans, who could perceive any form of Shadow as being a corrupted, twisted, “evil” energy that should be feared and fought. It should be noted however that not all Humans see Shadow in the same fashion, there are those who approximate the night elven views and claim that Shadow energies themselves, or how they are amassed, don’t clash with their teachings of right and wrong, and what matters is rather how such energies are employed. These Humans also claim that how such energies are amassed doesn’t differ too much from how wielders of the Light amass their energies, in that only a strong believe or will is needed.

Others, however, argue that belief and will are not enough. They would maintain that certain virtues, or rules, must be followed in order to command either holy or shadow energies, such a tradition is must noticeably found in the Human believe in the three virtues, the Forsaken seem to have a similar believe but based on a balance between Light and Shadow, and thus valuing different values. Also, paladins are said to lose their Light-given abilities if they willingly commit any act of “evil”.

Personally I see these believes as self-imposed barriers; believing one can only muster energies, be it Shadow or holy when certain virtues are upheld, or certain criteria are met, only engrosses the demands of Belief and Will, which, in reality, are the sole demands to muster these such energies. A point I find myself agreeing with is that emotion influences these energies, where rage and sorrow consolidate with Shadow energies to empower them, and sympathy and compassion strengthen holy energies. As an important side-note it should be kept in mind that the doctrines of the Light value a suppression of emotions, at least to some degree.

This chapter has only dealt with the Shadow energies that are derived from the varies doctrines and religions found around the world. This chapter was not meant to give an exhaustive list of the varies views on this subject, rather it is meant to illustrated that views on this matter vary greatly, however note that there’s a tendency within the Alliance to distrust or dismiss Shadow. In the following chapter we will consider the same kind of Shadow more closely and discuss it’s uses.

The pygmy blinds itself with the fallacy of logic and reason! The Forgotten Shadow bows to no man nor woman!

Only in Death can it be harnessed. Only by the Virtues can it flourish!
Heresy!
((Brilliant analysations! I'll be keen to read the rest. Nevertheless, I wanted to join the heresy-choir, just because.))

OOC: First of all thanks, Jeanpierre and Thenkar for your comments! The second chapter is done, and it far more heretic than the previous chapter. Again please point out if you think anything clashes with the lore, and uh, have fun reading.

Chapter 2 – Innate Shadow
In this chapter we will look closer at the Shadow energies that are formed through the doctrines and religions of this world. It should be noted that despite the wide-array of explanations given by various religious traditions as to where Shadow energies originate from, it would seem that there’s similarities in attained abilities across the traditions. This has several implications for this kind of Shadow energy, it proofs that Belief and Will, as being the common attributes across the traditions, are all that are needed to muster these energies. It is not the various deities of the traditions that provide the Shadow energies to the various devotees, but rather the Will of these devotees to be given these powers and the Belief they will be granted these powers and their Belief that they can master those powers that will. Their beliefs that their mastery of these energies is a direct gift from their deities is what provides them with their gifts, not their deities. It should be noted that not in all doctrines (concrete) deities exist, which is yet further evidence that it’s not deities providing them with their abilities.

This all has the implication that anyone with a strong enough Will and Belief to acquire mastery of these Shadow energies can attain just them, that is too say, they are innate to us all. It is my believe that the Shadow should come from the Will and Belief in one’s self, and not through belief in invisible deities or doctrines since these only serve to complicate the acquisition of a bond between one and one’s inner Shadow.

That the believe in deities or doctrines is not the way to summon the Shadow energies doesn’t mean there’s no use to the religious traditions across Azeroth; for they provide us with lessons to control, strengthen and employ Shadow energies. Consequently the study of religions and doctrines are encouraged for as far as they teach one to control, amass or shape the Shadow energies in ways useful to one’s purposes.

This brings us to why control over this innate Shadow should be attained. Upon studying the religious traditions, be that the dominant or the more obscure ones, found across Azeroth one will find that these innate Shadow energies have been attributed as to having many great uses such the power to corrupt minds; to alter perception, plague with nightmares and visions or even take over control! Different beliefs and doctrines have placed emphasis on different uses of these Shadow energies such as it’s use in stealth, shielding one’s self, crippling the bodies of foes or even healing one’s injuries! The concrete hows of these uses is beyond the scope of this text.

It should be noted that although these Shadow energies can be put to great use, there will be times that the study of this Shadow will not be enough. The use of the Light, often perceived as being the direct antagonist of the Shadow, can disrupt or undo whatever one wishes to attain with this Shadow energy. Other magical energies, such as those employed by Druids and Shamans could have similar disruptive effects. The specific hows of this is beyond the scope of this text, their mention only serves to point out that studying to control just these energies leaves a weak spot. In the next chapter we will consider other powers that in unison with these energies should prevent this weak spot from arising.
